Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has finally come good despite having to play out of position says his German international teammate Per Mertesacker.

The Gunners playmaker showed fantastic vision and pin point precision with his passing to set up Olivier Giroud for Arsenals first goal before scoring himself during Arsenals 5-0 demolition of Aston Villas on Sunday.

Sunday’s game was the first time Ozil had completed 90 minutes since being out with a knee injury for three months

Mertesacker knows that it will take time for Ozil to be fully match fit but thinks Ozil who is being played in left midfield to accommodate Santi Cazorla could be better used as a second striker.

He said: “It was not on his best position in my opinion, he played more on the left side, but he can play anywhere up front.

“It is good for him to get back his fitness maybe on the wing he is doing a bit more defensive work as well.

“He suffered a bit at the end of the game, but he always looked dangerous, was always available, wants the ball and wants to create something.”

Mertesacker played with Ozil at Werder Bremen thinks that now Ozil is starting to realise his potential at Arsenal.

“He was always that promising talent, and now he is showing a lot more, he has had so much experience in his young career,” he said.

He added: “Sometimes I wish he is more selfish in front of the goal, as you can see when he breaks through the lines, he should have scored instead of looking for another player. You can see he is dangerous and has pace when he really wants he is so quick, and he caused a lot of trouble, and was always a threat.”
