CLINT DEMPSEY missed an 89th-minute penalty as Tottenham blew a golden chance to get their hands on some silverware.

The £6million summer signing from Fulham admits himself he has not made the greatest of starts to life at White Hart Lane.

And things got worse after Marc Tierney brought down Kyle Walker in the box, giving the American a chance to notch his third goal for the club.

But keeper Mark Bunn kept out his penalty to send the Canaries into their first League Cup quarter-final for 18 years, where they will host Aston Villa.

Earlier, Gareth Bale had capped a brilliant performance with the opener before Jan Vertonghen deflected in an Alex Tettey shot for the equaliser.

And Simeon Jackson poached the winner three minutes from time before Dempsey’s agony.

Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas said: “It’s a pity to see the game slip from our hands.

“It’s disappointing for us not going through and to let in late goals.

“We had our fair share of opportunities and deserved the 1-0 lead.

“But they threw on their big guys Grant Holt, Simeon Jackson and Alex Tettey who create lots of problems. Now it’s back to the league.

“Big teams fall and we have fallen today.”

Norwich boss Chris Hughton — who spent 28 years as a player and coach at Spurs — insisted Bunn deserved his slice of fortune, claiming Walker had dived in the area.

He said: “I thought the lad made a bit of a meal of it. I spoke to Marc Tierney and he said he didn’t touch him. It was nice of Bunn to save it.

“It’s a nice feeling being in the last eight.

“Once you start hitting the quarters you’re not far away from the final and, for a club like us, it’s a chance to do well.”

For much of the match, it looked as if Bale had come back to haunt the Norfolk side.

The Welsh wizard opened the scoring, bringing back memories of his emphatic performance on Spurs’ last visit almost a year ago when he scored both goals in a 2-0 win.

After Norwich striker Steve Morison had the first on-target effort of the night blocked by Jake Livermore, Bale took over.

He had a piledriver from just inside the area well held by Bunn, then slipped in Dempsey, who fired wide.

And new dad Bale duly broke the deadlock on 66 minutes, latching on to a Tom Carroll pass before unleashing a superb drive into the bottom corner.

Then it all went Pete Tong — or more specifically, Vertong.

Spurs’ Belgian sub Vertonghen watched in horror as a shot from Tettey deflected off him and into the net.

And in the 87th minute, it went from bad to worse for the visitors.

Norwich sub Jackson was on the spot to take full advantage as French No 1 Hugo Lloris spilled a shot, allowing him to tap home the winner.
