It was Chelsea striker Fernando Torres who came to the rescue at Stamford Bridge this afternoon first setting up Andre Schurrle for the Blues opener  in the first half before Sergio Agüero pulled one back for City five minutes after the break with a stunning shot.

With the match looking as though it was heading for a 1-1 draw the Spaniard took advantage of a miscommunication between Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart and defender Matija Nastasic to put the ball into an empty goal for the Chelsea win bang on 90 minutes.

Chelsea is now second in the table two points behind Arsenal level on points with Liverpool.

“We then had that little bit of luck you need to win these matches,” Mourinho said. “Fernando believed until the last moment.

“We won a game which was very important for us. We beat maybe the best team in the Premier League.

“Everything happened for Torres after he missed an easy chance [in the first half]. After that, we saw the best Fernando.

“He worked unbelievably for the team. The second goal was a ‘believe goal’.”

While the Portuguese manager was thrilled with the result he still knows that there is a long way to go in the season.

“I am happy with our character, and the little bit of luck,” he continued.

“I think there are five or six fantastic teams who will fight for the Premier League. They are the best team, very dangerous and physical.

“When you beat maybe the best team, it gives you positive feelings.”

When Torres scored Mourinho was pictured celebrating with fans in the stand which the Chelsea boss explained later.

He continued: “I hope they do not misunderstand what I did by jumping into the crowd. My son was just behind the dugout.

“I had my feeling to go for the kid. It was not a lack of respect, it was just emotion. I did not run to the corner, I ran there.
