On-loan Liverpool striker gave Sunderland their first win of the season beating local rivals Newcastle 2-1 in the Stadium of Light.
While the Black Cats still remain in the relegation zone the win today has at least moved them off the bottom and heading back in the right direction.
Borini came on as a substitute late in the second half at a time when the game could have gone either way forcing Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul to make a save before minutes later blasting a Jozy Altidore layoff into the back of the net for Sunderland’s winner.
When talking to Sky Sports asked if the win over Newcastle could be the start of something the Italian said: “We hope so. We gave everything today.
“It is a special game and we need to show that every game is as special to us as this game. We won this game and hopefully we can get a few wins now.
“If we play like we played today, with a little bit more calm on the ball, we can really improve our game.”
It was also Gus Poyet’s first home game in charge of Sunderland and when asked if the new manager had made a difference Borini said: “Lots of the work we’ve done is because of him.
“He came in and gave us the enjoyment we needed and obviously the football. So now it’ll take a little bit of time to improve again, but that’s a great first step.
