Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed that the Blues will be bringing in a new striker this summer and has outlined what his main criteria is for getting the right type of player.

This past season Chelsea have struggled on the goal front with Samuel Eto’o scoring 14 goals and Fernando Torres 10 while Demba Ba has found the back of the nest on only eight occasions compared to Liverpool’s Luis Suarez who has scored 31 goals in the Premier League alone despite missing the start of the season for serving a ban.

Chelsea wanted man Diego Costa of Atletico Madrid has scored 36 goals in all competitions making him the ideal candidate for Mourinho.

“Our strikers are good strikers, but they are players with some specific qualities,” Mourinho told the Daily Star.

“They are not the kind of players who in five square metres – with three or four players around – can get the ball, dribble on, see the space and shoot.

“So when the team is in a difficult situation they are not able to, normally, resolve the situation for us.”

The Chelsea boss confirmed a striker was his summer priority but stressed there would be no big spending spree.

“Chelsea will be quite quiet in summer,” Mourinho said.

“We are going to do some critical signings.

“A striker? Yes.

“We have some basis for the improvement of next season, and we need that.

It was Chelsea’s inability to kill off games against lesser opposition that hurt the Blues this season and is something Mourinho will want to see fixed before they kick off a new campaign.
