Manchester United are reportedly close to securing their second signing of the season in Nampalys Mendy.

The defensive midfielder, duped the 'new Claude Makelele' is yet to sign a new deal with the recently promoted Monaco and could join Old Trafford on a free transfer.

French source LeSport10 broke the news that Mendy is on the verge of a move to England, with the player himself saying:

“I agreed with the club where I’m going, but I will not say anything before the holidays.”

Whilst many big name players come through the Monaco doors this summer, they still don't want to lose one of their own. Claudio Ranieri recently stated he doesn't want to lose Mendy, however his exit looks on the cards.

Manchester United's midfield

David Moyes has made bringing in a new centre-midfielder his main priority and has been linked with many world-class players including Cesc Fabregas.

Paul Scholes's retirement coupled with the consistent injury problems of Darren Fletcher has left the Red Devils short of recognised central midfielders. The only three are Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley and Anderson, all of whom have had their critics.

Whether or not Mendy is ready answer United's midfield problems is yet to be seen, however given his age he certainly is one for the future.

Other United gossip

Whilst United appear to have won the race for Mendy, Chelsea have edged ahead of them in the pursuit of Porto's Eliaquim Mangala.

Reports claim Chelsea are now favourites to sign the defender with Moyes on holiday and unable to hold talks with the 22-year-old personally.
