Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini insists his side must beat Chelsea on Sunday in order to stand any chance of staying in the title race this season.

The Premier League champions sit 12 points behind Manchester United, while Sir Alex Ferguson’s men have the chance to extend their advantage at the top of the table if they secure victory against QPR at Loftus Road on Saturday.

“We must win to keep the title race alive because I think United will win at QPR,” Mancini told reporters.

Following City’s dramatic title victory last term, Mancini maintains his side will continue their attempts to gain ground on United but concedes he will be disappointed if they lose their Premier League crown.

“We should hope that United can lose points between now and the [Manchester] derby. Only with this will we have a chance of winning this title,” he said.

“We don’t know if we can finish in first place, second place or third place. We have 12 games and we should do our best from now until the end. Then when the season is over we’ll see what happened.

“If you ask me if I’m happy to finish in second place, I would not be happy. I would be disappointed.”
