Manchester United has won the race to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels next summer according to the Daily Star despite the fact that Dortmund are publicly saying they want to keep hold of their star player.

Hummels had been linked to both Arsenal and Barcelona, but it now appears that Louis van Gaal will get the centre-back in a deal said to be worth £47 million.

Manchester United’s executive vice chairman Ed Woodward went on the record last month to confirm that there would be money for van Gaal to use in the transfer market saying: “We are not looking to enter the market for short-term fixes.

“However we have targets that we are looking at for next summer. Should any of them become available in January – which obviously is rare – we will consider acting. But in terms of expectations-setting we all need to recognise that is a low probability.”
