Spanish football expert Graham Hunter expects Manchester United to make an attempt to sign Valencia central defender Nicolas Otamendi, but says it could make more sense for the La Liga club to resist selling the Argentinian international.

Valencia is currently 4th in the Spanish top-flight three points above Sevilla, and with just nine games remaining look almost certain to qualify for Champions League football next season leading Hunter to believe that even if United was to make a £50 million bid Valencia would be tempted to say no.

While speaking to Sky Sports, Hunter said: “Manchester United’s interest in acquiring Otamendi is well established. Therefore, I would expect them to try to buy him in the summer.

“If they come in with £50million then Valencia have a decision to make.

“It is better football sense for Valencia’s level to use the good players they have got to earn Champions League revenue.”

If Valencia should fail to achieve Champions League football it is a different matter.

Adding: “Of course if they don’t get to the Champions League, then you could say everybody is for sale.

“If Valencia finish fifth, then their financial situation is such that big clubs will be able to pick off their best players.”
