Manchester United confident on transfer of Bastian Schweinsteiger as his Bayern deal enters final year

Boss Louis van Gaal has told negotiator Ed Woodward to sort a reunion with 31-year-old midfielder he knows from his days as the German giants’ coach.

Manchester United is nearing a £7.5million deal for Bayern Munich star Bastian Schweinsteiger, writes Steve Bates in the Sunday People.

Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal is confident he can lure his former player away from the Allianz Arena and transfer negotiator Ed Woodward has been tasked with making it happen.

Midfielder Schweinsteiger – who will be 31 in August – only has a year left on his deal with German champions Bayern.

And it is believed the Germany star is tempted to link-up with Van Gaal, who managed him when he was in charge at Bayern from 2009-2011, at the Old Trafford giants.

Germany legend Lothar Matthaus said: “Schweinsteiger needs a coach who will play him according to his strengths, and Van Gaal will do that.”
