Manchester United is plotting a daring January double swoop for Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and Schalke’s Benedikt Howedes.

Manager Louis van Gaal knows that the team’s weakness lies in defense, and has identified the two German international as the men to come in and reinforce the back.

Previously it was reported that United were trying to do a deal with Real Madrid for Portuguese international Raphael Varane, but it now appears the Spanish giants are not willing to let him leave.

Both Hummels and Howedes were Manchester United targets last summer, but are both now keen to leave their Bundesliga clubs and play in the Premiership.

Arsenal has also been linked with the pair, but the Sunday Express is reporting they would prefer to go to Old Trafford rather than the Emirates.
