Former Manchester United striker, and Uruguayan hero Diego Forlan says that Angel Di Maria’s problems at Manchester United lay at the feet of Dutch manager Louis van Gaal, adding that throughout his career the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich trainer has always had a problem with players from South America.

Despite an initial good start to like in the Premiership the clubs record £59.7 million signing has failed to adapt to the English game, with United probably prepared to sell the Argentinian if they could get their money back, with Forlan saying that the 27-year-old’s failure to deliver is all down to van Gaal.

‘I thought he was a superb signing for United because he’s one of the best players in the world but I was slightly surprised too,” said Forlan.

“Louis van Gaal has never been a fan of South American players, as my good friend Juan Roman Riquelme will tell you from his time under the Dutchman at Barcelona.

‘Di Maria started out in England like the player we knew he was at Real Madrid in the 2013/14 season. He looked a class above opponents, he ran at defenders, he was a danger around the box and he covered so much ground. Less talented players have felt they were too good to work as hard as him.
