Liverpool were not planning on going after Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain until the summer transfer window, but now that Napoli manager Rafa Benitez has signed Sampdoria frontman Manolo Gabbiadini for £11million, the club could be under pressure to sell a player to comply with Financial Fair Play rules.
The most likely candidate is Gonzalo Higuain who was already expected to try and force a move come June after Benítez has had to fend of accusations that Higuain cannot play alongside fellow striker Duvan Zapata.
“Can Higuain and Zapata play together? Yes, it’s a possibility and we did that a few times during games, but it can be an option when starting too,” Benitez said last month.
Liverpool knows that a bid of £30 million will trigger the Argentinians release clause, so could very well make a move in the coming weeks.
