How many Manchester United fans remember when the Red Devils went after PSV winger Arjen Robben in the summer of 2004, only to lose out to Chelsea who blew United’s £8 million offer out of the water with a £12 million bid of their own.
Now 12 years on the 31-year-old winger still dazzles the fans for his current club Bayern Munich, as United is presented with a second chance at a Dutch winger who despite playing on the opposite flank is being called the new Arjen Robben.
At only 21-years-old Memphis Depay got everyone’s attention after having been called up to Holland’s World Cup squad under then manager Louis van Gaal who now wants to bring the exciting prospect to Old Trafford this summer in what is expected to be a major spending spree with players both coming in and exciting the Salford based club.
If the comparisons between Depay and Robben are true, United really cannot pass up the opportunity to sign him which was why van Gaal was in Amsterdam on Tuesday to watch the Eindhoven star in action during Holland’s 2-0 friendly victory over Spain.
The question now assuming United will sign Depay is who will make room in the team with Ashley Young, Adnan Januzaj and Angel di Maria all fighting for their places.
If we here at Soccer Transfers were having to decide, our vote would go for Ashley Young who can play various positions for the Red Devils meaning Adnan Januzaj and Angel di Maria could be heading for the exit.
