Joe Gomez claims he joined Liverpool because of manager Brendan Rodgers’ policy of giving young players a chance to break into the clubs first team.

The England U-19 defender picked the Reds over Arsenal, Aston Villa and Manchester City as he saw Liverpool as the kind of club where he could quickly make an impact rather than wait a few years or be sent out on loan before being given a chance to play.

“I met him [Rodgers] and that was a defining factor,” he said. “He was positive and has already shown he will give young players an opportunity.

“I thought carefully where would be the best place and give me the best chance to play – it was Liverpool.

“I had my mind set on Liverpool and tried not to let the talk of other clubs distract me. I didn’t really focus too much on anything else.”
