Spanish international goalkeeper David De Gea is close to signing a new long-term contract with Manchester United after interest from Real Madrid trainer Carlo Ancelotti seems to have cooled down after weeks of speculation that the Spanish giants saw him as the perfect replacement for the aging Iker Casillas.

Apparently Ancelotti has told Real Madrid that he is quite happy to go with current goalkeepers Iker Casillas and Keylor Navas for now and that signing De Gea is not a priority.

This news comes as a huge relief for United as they now hope to tie down the 24-year-old to a new long-term contract before his current deal expires in the summer.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel says that getting De Gea to commit his future to United sends out a message to other top players as the Red Devils look to return to the top of English football.
