Chelsea new boy Juan Cuadrado has yet to show why the club paid Fiorentina £23.3 million for him after failing to impress in any of the four games he has played in since moving to England.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has told the press when asked about his thoughts on the Colombian winger that “he is adapting.”

“He needs to adapt in everything.

“The pace of the game, in Italy it’s completely different. The intensity is much higher [here], it is different to play at the intensity we play – especially for 90 minutes.”

Cuadrado was playing such good football in Italy that this and his performance in last summer’s World Cup gained him the attention of Europe’s top teams, and while it may take him some time to settle in, Mourinho also thinks he may have to change his style of play.

“At Fiorentina he was playing as a wide player; here he has to go to areas where he’s not adapted to it,” he said. “I truly believe we are not seeing the player we know we have because the kid needs to adapt.”
