Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has urged top striker Diego Costa to rediscover his goal scoring form following the Blues shock 2-1 away loss to Newcastle and the previous week’s 0-0 draw with Sunderland.

Costa has now only scored two goals for Chelsea since October, and Mourinho has said that the Spaniard needs to be fully fit if he is to regain the form that saw him score 11 goals in the Premiership.

“For me, the problem is not the goals,” said Mourinho. “They will come as a consequence of his condition.

“He has to improve his condition. He was injured and had many doubts because he went a long time without training.

“Obviously that must have an effect on a player in the way he runs, the way he moves and in his coordination.

“I don’t think there is a problem but he has to recover.”

Having already qualified for the knockout stage of the Champions League Mourinho is expected to rest several players when the Blues take on Sporting Lisbon at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, but he could just start Costa in the hope that he regains his sharpness in front of the net.
