Belgium international trainer Marc Wilmots described Hazard as “the worst player out there” while Liverpool striker Christian Benteke did not return to the match against Cyprus in the second half.

Wilmots was far from impressed by the premiership pair, despite Hazard scoring the only goal in the 1-0 win over Cyprus Saturday night.

“He (Hazard) was the worst tonight,’ said Wilmots after the game.

“I thought about substituting him, but in the last 10 minutes he always has the ability to do that [score]. At the World Cup, this was the case.

“I obviously expect more from him, but he will grow as the season progresses.”

Meanwhile £32 million Liverpool striker Christian Benteke was hauled off at half-time to be replaced by club teammate Divock Origi.

When asked why he subbed Benteke, Wilmots blamed the Liverpool striker’s “half performance”.

Wilmots added: “The contribution of Origi and [Dries] Mertens in the second half was important, because I wanted quick combinations. As a result, in the last half hour we were often dangerous.”
