Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho speaking to the BBC has said that the club has moved on since the departure of 36-year-old Frank Lampard this summer and that new signing from Barcelona 27-year-old Cesc Fabregas is the future.

“Frank is the history of the club, history nobody can forget,” said Mourinho.

“Fabregas is the future; history is history but the future is more important at the moment.”

Lampard joined Manchester City’s MLS franchise New York City FC, but is on loan at the Etihad until January before joining the MLS club for pre-season training ahead of their season which kicks off in March.

Mourinho added: “My opinion, and the opinion of my players, is that Fabregas is the right player to occupy that central position in midfield.”
