David Beckham has made his first start for new club Paris St Germain in a French Cup match against Marseille.

The 37-year-old playmaker was deployed in a central defensive midfielder alongside Blaise Matuidi, with Joey Barton opposing Beckham for the second time in a week with his Marseille side.

Beckham initially featured off the bench at the weekend, but started in the first team for his side on this occasion. PSG won 2-0 against Marseille in the league last week, and this fixture ended with the same result, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored from the spot and then finishing off a well prepared move starting from a David Beckham pass.

Carlo Ancelotti commented on Beckham’s performance post-match, stating: “He made good passes as usual, he was well positioned on the pitch alongside Blaise Matuidi. He was very solid.”

Joey Barton, who plays for Marseille on loan from QPR, proved no match for the English playmaker.

Beckham played the whole 90 minutes alongside his new team mates, and has currently helped his team to progress through the rounds in the French Cup and to a three point lead at the top of Ligue 1.

The former England skipper has settled in well in the French capital, and has recently expressed his delight at his current performances.
