It was a well-known fact around the Emirates that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s number one summer signing was going to be Southampton defensive midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin with some reports suggesting that terms between him and the Gunners had already been agreed upon.

Now however it would appear as if the Saints, according to the Daily Mirror, are prepared to do whatever it takes to keep the French international at the club even if it means making him their highest ever paid player.

Schneiderlin still has two-years remaining on his current contract with Dutch manager Ronald Koeman encouraging the club to extend the deal and at the same time offer the 25-year-old a salary of £60,000 per-week.

Southampton hopes to get a deal done before the end of the season or risk seeing him leave to either Arsenal or another top club.
