Arsenal have upped their pace in search of a defensive midfielder according to the Evening Standard, with manager Arsene Wenger thinking that he has found what he needs in Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho.

The Gunners boss also remains keen on Real Madrid’s German international Sami Khedira, but is reluctant to meet his demand of £150,000 per-week in wages.

Carvalho currently only earns £4,129 a month at Sporting, and would jump at the chance to join a top Premiership side such as Arsenal, but it is not only the Gunners who are watching him with both Manchester United and Manchester City thought to be interested in the 22-year-old.

Carvalho has a release clause of £37 million built into his contract, but Arsenal believe they will accept less if the offer is paid up front in cash so that Sporting can then go out and invest in new players.

Meanwhile over in Spain Real Madrid is still hoping that a deal can be done with Arsenal for Khedira after already lining up Wolfsburg star Luis Gustavo as a possible replacement.
