Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s need for a centre-back and a holding midfielder is well known, and after having a £20 million bid for versatile midfielder William Carvalho turned down in the summer, the Gunners boss is now ready to test the waters with a bid of £25 million.

Wenger has been carefully studying Loic Perrin, Sami Khedira, Grzegorz Krychowiak and Morgan Schneiderlin and has now come to the conclusion that the Portuguese international represents better value for money.

In Carvalho, Wenger know he has a player who can cover both positions and will now go back to Sporting with a new offer.
