Arsenal sent chief scout Steve Rowley to Germany this weekend to watch the newly-capped Freiburg centre-back Matthias Ginter as they plot to sign him early in the summer.

The Gunners have been watching the 6ft 3in centre-back for months now and have come to the conclusion that he is a player they want to bring to the Emirates.

The 20-year-old made his German debut against Chile and is tipped to be on the plane to Brazil as cover for Arsenals Per Mertesacker.

Wenger is eyeing Ginter as a player that will have a long term future with Arsenal even though in the beginning he may have to be happy with a place on the Gunners bench.

Manchester United have also been showing interest in the £8 million rated  German, but Arsene Wenger has good relations with Freiburg and should win the battle if both United and Arsenal try to sign him.

With Belgium international Thomas Vermaelen set to leave in the summer Ginter would be a shroud buy for Arsenal.
