Quite a few Premiership sides led by Arsenal and Spurs have been tracking the fortunes of Sunderland manager Gus Poyet’s son Diego.

The 18-year-old is out of contract with Charlton this summer after having broken into the first team under Chris Powell in January and has played two full games since new manager Jose Riga took charge.

The midfielder has made nine appearances for the Addicks senior team, and was very impressive over the weekend at Millwall.

Diego’s father Gus played for both Chelsea and Spurs as well as representing Uruguay international,  but his son feels that if he is to be successful in the Premiership he needs to be able to do it without the help of his dad telling the Daily Mail: ‘Now that I’ve started playing in the first team people compare me to my dad, but then they realise we’re nothing like each other in terms of our position.’

Poyet has played internationally for England schoolboys but has expressed a desire to play for Uruguay if the opportunity presented itself.
