According to Spanish newspaper El Confidential Liverpool and Arsenal are set to go head to head for Real Madrid defensive midfielder Asier Illarramendi.

The 24-year-old has seen his playing time cut at the Santiago Bernabeu under trainer Carlo Ancelotti and is now said to be looking for an exit from the club.

His former club Real Sociedad would like to sign him as would Atletic Bilbao , but with Real Madrid said to be asking 24€ million it might prove a little expensive for the Basque clubs leaving the door open for the Premiership duo to fight it out.

When asked if the club would be willing to sell Illarramendi, Ancelotti said: “Illarra is a Real Madrid player, “Nothing has changed. He is a player of Real Madrid and though it’s true he hasn’t played much, we still have confidence in him. He’s important in the locker room.”
