Following the Costa Rican goalkeeper’s performance in the penalty shootout with Greece that sees the tiny Central American country reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time in its history, Premiership giants Arsenal and Liverpool are both now seriously thinking about making a move for the Levante goalkeeper.

Currently the 27-year-old Navas only has one year remaining on his contract with the La Liga club and could be had for the very reasonable price of £6.5 million.

His Costa Rican teammate Celso Borges said: “He was born on Mars or Venus or something. He’s fantastic.

“He has given us so much. He’s a leader on and off of the pitch. With his saves we always get second chances and he’s a great person. He deserves all this attention.

“The secret was already out I think, but this has taken him to centre stage. But we knew it from the start. I’ve known him for a long time. He’s awesome.”

Last season Navas emerged alongside Atletico Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois as one of the two best shot stoppers in La Liga with Navas now hoping that Costa Rica can go the unthinkable and beat Holland in Salvador on Saturday.
