Liverpool takes on Newcastle United tonight at Anfield with the knowledge that anything but a win will kill off their slim hope of playing Champions League football next season following Manchester United 4-2 win over City at Old Trafford yesterday afternoon.

Despite coming close to winning the Premiership last season the Reds now realize that this seasons problems started last summer when they failed to bring in a quality replacement for Luis Suarez after selling the Uruguayan to Barcelona.

The problem was compounded when they lost fellow striker Daniel Sturridge to injury, and knee jerk signing Mario Balotelli failed to fit in with manager Brendan Rodgers style of play.

The problem Liverpool has is three-fold with them not having the financial firepower of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and now Arsenal since the Gunners paid off the Emirates Stadium.

Secondly the club is trying to impress prospective players with their amazing history, but to be honest last time Liverpool won the Premier League was in 1990 some 25-years-ago when must of the players they want to sign now had not even been born yet.

Thirdly it is the fact the idea of living in or near Liverpool is not as appealing to a young player when compared to life in London, as Alexis Sanchez proved when he decided to join Arsenal rather than live in the Northwest.

Liverpool’s owners need to factor in these equations or just like Tottenham Liverpool will be a team who only ever manage to play in the Europa League.
