Wenger to break rules and offer Sagna new contract

The Daily Mirror is reporting that Arsene Wenger has broken club rules and offered French international defender the new three-year contract he was asking for.

The 31-year-old Sagna will be out of contract this summer and has been the interest of top teams on the continent as well as Manchester City in the Premiership who were said to be prepared to offer him the three-year deal he wanted at Arsenal plus a very good wage packet.

Realizing that they were going to lose a very experienced player that still has a lot to give to another club that obviously values him Wenger has made an exception to the rule of only offering players over the age of 30 a one-year extension.

The new deal on the table will hopefully convince Sagna to stay and finish his career as a Gunner.

Wenger said: “He (Sagna) has an offer, he has not come back to us yet. That (City offer) cannot be right because it’s illegal.

“I’m confident he will stay but we will accept his decision. No matter what his decision will be, we will accept it and go on with it.”

Talking about the over 30 player policy Wenger said: “Look not for the defenders no. It depends. It’s a general law in our club yes. But after it’s not a stupid law, we look at individual cases and we adapt it to the individuals.”
