The ex-England captain started training with the Gunners yesterday — as revealed by SunSport — and will stay for three weeks until he decides on his future.

Boss Wenger, whose side host Liverpool tonight, insists it is unlikely he will sign Becks.

And the Frenchman hinted Beckham, 37, may not find a new club until the summer.

Wenger said: “He’s fantastic — that is one of the reasons I took him here.

“Beckham always has a good word for people. The young English players look at him and take his advice on board. His advice is positive.

“This guy has fantastic quality and has done the maximum in his career. Why? Because he loves football. After training he stays and plays.”

Beckham, a free agent after leaving LA Galaxy after 5½ years last month, rang Wenger to ask permission to train with the club for a third time.

And yesterday he wore the No 29 kit previously used by Marouane Chamakh, who has joined West Ham on loan.

Wenger added: “It is purely for fitness. There’s no speculation about signing.

“He’s a sportsman and wants to get fit — because maybe in June he has plans to play somewhere. Or maybe he will take three or four months off?

“He has given England great service and you always try to help these people.”

Beckham has offers from QPR, West Ham and Monaco, plus clubs from China, Brazil and South Africa.

But the former Manchester United and Real Madrid ace is leaning towards a move to Paris Saint-Germain or AC Milan.

Arsenal appear unlikely to sign anyone before tomorrow’s transfer deadline after Wenger admitted his move for Barcelona striker David Villa is over.

Wenger said: “Barcelona don’t want to sell, they have made that very, very clear.”

As for tonight’s clash with Liverpool, Wenger said: “It is a very important game — we cannot afford to drop points.”
