Defoe scored twice and Gareth Bale was also on target in a victory which eased the early pressure on new boss AVB.

The England striker said: “Hopefully, everyone who has been doubting us will now look and think we will do well this season and kick on from here.

“In previous games we have scored first and then conceded late goals. We wanted to try to get that out of our game.

“It was important to get a second so we didn’t panic at 1-0. And once we were 2-0 up we took control and could easily have won by more.

“We were the better team, created a lot of chances and it’s a good win. I definitely could have scored a hat-trick.

“But to score twice and help my team win is fantastic. The main thing is we have the three points and our season starts now.

“It’s only normal for things to take time when a new manager comes in.”
