Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa is set to sign for Liverpool in January, with manager Brendan Rodgers seeing the former Spanish international as a short term replacement for Glen Johnson.

The 31-year-old has been cast to the side-lines in Carlo Ancelotti’s team making just five la Liga appearances due to the form of 23-year-old Daniel Carvajal, who has cemented his place on the right-back position.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea were linked with a move for the defender during the summer, but it appears now that he would favour a return to Merseyside where he played under countryman Rafa Benítez from 2007 till 2009.

Expect this deal to be done quickly as Arbeloa wants to push a deal through as soon as possible.
