MARTIN O’NEILL has told Adam Johnson he can cement his England place with Sunderland.
Johnson, 25, missed out on a place in Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2012 squad after falling out of favour at Manchester City.
The £10million signing is set to make his Black Cats debut at the Stadium of Light against Morecambe in the Capital One Cup tonight.
And O’Neill is confident Johnson can stake a claim to play a part in England’s World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine next month.
O’Neill said: “He’s a very exciting player. If he is playing more regularly and playing well, international football is still a big goal of Adam’s.”
