According to Spanish newspaper Superdeporte, Manchester United’s scout in Spain Carlos Ruiz was in attendance at the Martinez Valero stadium in Elche on Friday night to watch Valencia’s Argentinian centre-back Nicolas Otamendi in action.
The 27-year-old has become a pivotal player for Valencia since arriving from Porto last summer with the La Liga side already having turned down a £27 million offer from United during the January transfer window.
United however has not given up on Otamendi who is also believed to be a target for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, but with Valencia sitting fourth in La Liga they have aspirations of the Champions League next season and are trying desperately to tie the defender down to a new contract which will include a £60 million buyout clause.
The United scout will be reporting back to Louis van Gaal with the news that the Argentinian put in a stellar performance that included a goal in Valencia’s convincing 0-4 win.
