Manager Louis van Gaal could be given the green light to spend £150 million in January after sitting down with chief executive Ed Woodward and another member of the United board on Friday.

LVG will tell them the top names on his wish list, who are believed to be Mats Hummel’s, Kevin Strootman and Nathaniel Clyne.

Van Gaal is looking for no less than a tip-four finish to secure Champions League football his first season in charge and if he thinks he needs to bring in a top signing in January in order to secure a place around the top he will do so.

Southampton right –back Nathaniel Clyne is unlikely to be available in January leaving open the possibility that United could make a move for Everton’s Seamus Coleman, if not they will wait until the summer for Clyne.

Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummel’s is the clear January target, and with the Westphalia side looking like they may be relegated, the German international would be eager to move on with United very much a top destination.

Here at Soccer Transfers we feel that if United can sign the 26-year-old for £40 million it is a move LVG should make, and goes in line with his plans for the future at Old Trafford.
