Arsenal and Manchester united appear as if they will go up against each other in order to sign Schalke World Cup winning defender Benedikt Howedes during the next transfer window.

Howedes grabbed the attention of the two Premier League heavyweights following his performances for Schalke this season, and with both Louis van Gaal and Arsene Wenger likely to look to strengthen their defences the 26-year-old will become a big target.

The Mirror is reporting the two Premier League sides will be making offers of around £14 million for the German defender who is at home as either a centre-back or left-back.

Despite the arrival of Gabriel Paulista to the Emirates the Gunners are still considered to be leading the race after constantly watching the Schalke man, but having said that Manchester United and the big spending plans they have for the summer are unlikely to let him sign for Arsenal without a fight.
