Manchester United is expected to revive their interest in the German national team captain Mats Hummels next summer after failing to sign the Dortmund defender last year.
Van Gaal is known to be a huge admirer of the 26-year-old according to Holland legend Ruud Gullit, who admits he was surprised that van Gaal had not managed to sign Hummels for United yet.
When speaking to goal.com the former Chelsea and AC Milan star said: “It is a surprise that Van Gaal didn’t buy any good central defenders – that had to be his priority.
“He was crazy about Hummels and wanted to buy him. So I would have bought Man United some good defenders because that was the weakest link. For me, that they did not was a surprise. Nevertheless, he gets results. The more results he gets, the more confidence they get and the better they will play.”
Manchester United lost to Swansea City 2-1 on Saturday with defenders Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Luke Shaw all taking stick for their poor performance at the back, which will now surely prompt van Gaal to weight up another move for Hummels in the summer.
