Ever since the arrival of Jürgen Klopp on Merseyside several of his former Dortmund players are now being linked with the club including Schalke 04 defender Benedikt Howedes.

In a recent interview with German newspaper Bild, the World Cup winning star had high praise for Liverpool as a club but stopped short of saying he would follow Klopp to England.

When asked if he was tempted by the high wages on offer in the Premiership the centre-back said: ‘This may sound crazy, but for me it does not depend on the money. For that, I am too much of a football romantic and I am too ambitious.’

‘Abroad still excites me – England sure is an interesting choice. But of course, the money is also important, as footballers we can only earn money for a limited time.

‘English football is very fortunate to have someone like Klopp in the league… Liverpool is a club with great tradition and values.’

When asked if Klopp could be his next manager Howedes replied: ‘I am with Schalke 04 and currently have an objective here… but of course for any footballer there are clubs which are more interesting than others.’

The German defenders contract is up in 2017, which means that if Liverpool were interested in signing Benedikt Howedes that could force Schalke’s hand in either of the next two transfer windows.
