Steve Howey claims Newcastle are in real danger of being relegated from the Premier League this season and need a ‘big signing’ this month to turn around their woeful form.

Alan Pardew’s side have won only three of their last 18 games and sit just two points above the relegation zone after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Reading .

Speaking to the Sports Breakfast, Howey admitted he fears the club will struggle to escape the drop if the board don’t back Pardew in the transfer window this month.

“Without a doubt, they are in a relegation battle. Saturday’s result confirmed that,” said the former Magpies defender.

“Everybody says they are too good to go down but the Premier League is a strong league and there are no teams where you can say ‘this result is a given’. They found that out on Saturday.

“They are in a dogfight, no doubt about that. Every single game they play now is a six-pointer.

“They need something to give them a lift,” added Howey, who played more than 240 times for Newcastle. “A big signing between now and the end of the transfer window will hopefully do that.

“Loic Remy going to QPR when it looked as though a move to Newcastle was signed and sealed was obviously a huge disappointment to the manager and the club, but they need something.

“The funds are there, because obviously they went out and tried to buy Remy before he went to QPR.”
