The Spanish side are experiencing economic troubles, and with the huges wages Falcao requires, Marin conceded maintaining the first team squad is difficult while the star striker remains at the club.

“The €60 million for Falcao would solve all the economic problems at Atletico,” admitted Marin, speaking to COPE Radio.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea have been strongly linked with the Colombian international goal machine and such a public statement from the Atletico Madrid general manager will surely leave all interested parties scrambling to collect funds to make a significant offer for the 26 year old.

The former FC Porto man has been scoring goals for fun in Spain, netting 36 in his debut season and then going off like the proverbial train during the current campaign with 11 goals in seven matches. Now it appears that Atletico Madrid are once more considering cashing in on a star turn.

They have of course sold the likes of Fernando Torres, Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero in similar circumstances.

Arsenal may well struggle to get anywhere near the £48m fee Mr Marin mentions, as that would be more or less three times the North London club’s record transfer spend. Chelsea on the other hand don’t have any qualms about forking out such a sum, indeed they paid more for Torres, a player who is only now beginning to come near to justifying that fee.

Arsene Wenger may well be open to bringing in further attacking options as currently he possesses only two quality strikers, in the form of summer signings Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud, and indeed the German is being used more in a wide attacking role.

Moroccan Marouane Chamakh is now surplus to requirements and Nicklas Bendtner and Park Chu-Young are unlikely to return to the club following their season long loan spells at Juventus and Celta Vigo respectively.

No doubt Man City will put in an offer despite having four world class forwards at their disposal!
