LIONEL MESSI smashed the all-time world record for most goals in one season last night – reaching an astonishing 72.

The previous record was held by Scotsman Archie Stark, who banged in 70 goals for US side Bethlehem Steel in 1924/25.

Messi’s haul also saw him reach 50 La Liga goals for the season and was his 14th hat-trick in Spain’s top division, which broke Barca’s previous record held by Cesar Rodriguez.

Cristiano Ronaldo also hit a personal milestone as he fired home his 300th career goal in Real Madrid’s 2-1 win away to Granada.

Ronaldo, who had already wrapped up the La Liga title for Real last week, has now scored 111 goals in just 100 league appearances for the Spanish giant
