Following his performance against Manchester City on Sunday, Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin is to be offered a new contract before becoming a free agent in the summer.

The 23-year-old Frenchman just returned to the club following a loan spell at Charton Athletic and is now free to talk with clubs not in the Premiership.

Last season Coquelin played for Freiburg in the Bundesliga with his last appearance for Arsenal against West Brom in April of 2013.

His change in physique over the last couple of seasons is quite noticeable, with manager Wenger full of praise on Sunday saying: “I took him at the age of 16 from France. He has gone through some difficult periods but he has learnt from his experiences.

“I always kept faith in him and told him three months ago he needed to play. He accepted going to Charlton, he came back and has done very well.”
