It is looking more likely that Arsenal will sign Ajax’s star defender over rival Spurs.

Arsenal favourites to sign Belgium International
Jan Vertonghen was in London to watch Arsenals fantastic display over AC Milan in the Champions League, and to meet up with his friend, and Belgium team-mate Thomas Vermaelen after the match.

The Ajax centre-back told Vermaelen that he was very impressed with Arsenal, and loved the way they play.

With only one year left on his contract at Ajax Vertongen knows that it is time to leave Holland, and the Premiership looks like his next stop.

With a few other clubs interested including Spurs it could be a wise move for Arsenal to get in early, and sign the 25-year-old defender.

When asked about signing a new contract with Ajax Vertonghen said: “I am ready for a move abroad now. I have played at Ajax for almost six years in the first team and I think it is time to make another step in my career,’’

Ajax would love to keep the youngster but realize they cannot compete with the big money clubs of Europe.

Referring to this Vertonghen said: “They have said they want to sit down and talk about a new deal, but I think they realise that I could be leaving anyway. And I do think that a nice move is on the way for me.”
