Both Arsenal and Liverpool look set to lose out in their desire to sign Barcelona right-back Martin Montoya as French Ligue 1 side Marseille move close to a deal.

The clubs coach Marcelo Bielsa has asked the club to sign the defender knowing that he has enjoyed very little playing time since the arrival of new coach Luis Enrique at the Nou Camp.

Bielsa had wanted to sign Montoya last summer, but will now try again during the January transfer window.

Montoya’s agent Juan de Dios Carrasco recently spoke of his clients desire to leave Barcelona despite being given more playing time of late.

The 23-year-old is under contract until 2018 and has a release clause of £18 million, but could well leave for less if he makes it clear he wants to go.
