The slumbering Italian giants are keen for the Special One to return to the San Siro and repeat his heroic spell with local rivals Inter.

Mourinho, expected to leave Real Madrid this summer, could be tempted — especially as the odds are mounting against him making an emotional return to English football at the end of the season.

Alex Ferguson has vowed to carry on at Manchester United while Pep Guardiola is heading to Manchester City.

Tottenham and Liverpool have recently appointed young coaches in Andre Villas-Boas and Brendan Rodgers and both have limited budgets.

Which leaves only Arsenal or Mourinho’s former club Chelsea.

Arsene Wenger is a fixture after 17 years with the Gunners and Chelsea’s interim boss Rafa Benitez could stay permanently if he finishes in the top three and wins a trophy.

So Mourinho may be restricted to three clubs – Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.

The attraction of Milan, one of the world’s most successful clubs, would be hard for him to ignore.

Milan president Silvio Berlusconi has pledged to restore the club to its former glory.

He admits he failed with a bid to bring in ex-Barca boss Guardiola.

So now Mourinho has become Milan’s top target — if they match his £13.5million Real salary.
