Lazio have stepped up their efforts to sign Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov, according to Il Corriere dello Sport.

Italian side looking to sign Berbatov on the cheap

The Bulgarian is looking to leave Old Trafford in search of first team football, after falling behind Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez in the pecking order.

Sir Alex Ferguson earlier revealed that he would not stand in the player’s way and it is now clear that Berbatov will leave at the end of the season.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport, Lazio are pondering a summer swoop for the highly rated forward.

The Italian newspaper claims that the Biancocelesti officials have met with the player’s representative Emil Dantchev to negotiate personal terms.

The 31-year-old striker has just over a year left on his deal at Old Trafford, meaning that he should be available at a cut-back price in the summer.

Berbatov has started just 5 Premier League games this season, while making 6 substitute appearances, but still managed to score 7 league goals.
