Arsenal are set to make a another raid on Southampton with 17-year-old full back Luke Shaw their target.
They had the promising full-back watched at St Mary’s Stadium yesterday when he played the last 25 minutes of the 1-0 defeat to Dutch champions Ajax.
Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have already been recruited from the Saints and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has had rave reports about Shaw.
He looked confident and competent enough in a match treated with stunning indifference by the Southampton fans.
It is never a good sign when the players can be heard above the crowd – which numbered a mere 5713.
The Premier League newcomers lost to a second-half strike from Aras Ozbiliz.
“We presented them with their goal and they never carved us open,” said Saints boss Nigel Adkins.
“It was an outstanding test for us and one lesson we learned was that we have to keep the ball better.”
