Manchester United have reignited their interest for Borussia Dortmund’s player Mat Hummels, according to German tabloid Bild.

It is reported that the United Chiefs are prepared to lodge a bid for Hummels over the summer transfer window. They once tried to sign the player in 2014 but the deal fell through due to the reluctance of the Dortmund officials to let their priced possession leave.

His current contract runs out in the summer of 2017 therefore the player has some power in deciding his future if he chooses to go elsewhere.

The world cup winner has been ever present in Dortmund’s defence, where he made 26 starts in the Bundesliga, with eight games remaining. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether they could still let him leave, knowing how crucial he is to them.

This report comes as a surprise since United boast of some of the best centre-backs in the League. The likes of Chris Smalling and Daley Blind have been able to shield the defence even with the absence of the injured Phil Jones.

However, the reports could yet hold water since the United are rumored to be set for a managerial change and we can never tell what players the new manager would like to work with.

Mats Hummels has also been linked with a move to Arsenal. The Gunners are said to be interested in Hummels as likely replacement for Per Mertesacker who turns 32 in September and hasn’t been offered a deal deal.

However, Manchester United can beat the Gunners to his signing. Although with Arsenal certainly going to be playing in the Champions league next season, the Gunners have a great advantage in the race for the signature of the German but knowing Wenger and knowing that Dortmund will want top dollar/pound for their star, United can manage to edge out the Gunners in the race to sign the ball playing centre back.
