Aleksander Kolarov believes Manchester City are a better side than runaway league leaders Manchester United.

The City defender bemoaned the club’s away form and pinpointed their performances on the road as their downfall, allowing their neighbours to open up a 15 point gap at the top with only eight games remaining.

And the 27-year-old admits the Red Devils deserve to reclaim the Premier League crown as they have been the better team throughout the season.

“I have to be honest, they have been better this season,” Kolarov told Sky Sports News.

“We have played good, but some games we have made mistakes. Against small teams, we have made a lot of mistakes – away especially.”

Turn back 12 months ago and it was at this stage of the season that City began their late surge to the Premier League title, which culminated in Sergio Aguero’s last-gasp, title-winning goal.

However, this season their hopes of retaining their title look to be over and the Serbia international believes that will provide City with motivation ahead of Monday’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

He added: “They deserve it because they are in first place at the moment. But, for us, that doesn’t change anything. We are going to try and win in the game at Old Trafford, to be proud.

“They are confident in this moment and it will be a different game but – if we play like we know, if we are all at 100 per cent – I think we are better than them.”
